Feeling brain bog, overwhelmed by clutter, blurred by words written here and there… they say the practice of origami could help clear, organize and focus our minds and work stations. With the 8 ½ x 11” canvas laid in front of me, who can dispute looking at a blank piece of paper relaxes the mind and fosters thinking of nothing…at least not those distractions that bury the surface beneath it.
On the other hand, if wadding up a piece of paper for a three-foot lob and a 2-point swisher is your idea of origami, there may be other ways to clean off your desktop, organize little things and prepare to break ground for productivity to flourish.
Could therapeutic benefits lie in the origami folds?
For me the kitchen is my workspace. And with this unconventionality, comes the built in clutter-cap. That’s right, a cap on clutter. A less than common business term, but well known to have an inverse relationship to what one can produce. For me, this cap is determined by hunger and the quest for good food.
The counter was clear and clean three days ago. But like a migration to fertile land or a desert oasis, big and small they came to crowd where I eat and drink. Dog eared cooking magazines, specialty ingredients waiting for my inspired use, the open notebook for ideas…and seeds collected from this year’s favorite garden goodies, a few loose paperclips, paper scraps of forget-me-nots …all have found their way and gathered around the stove, the refrigerator and sink.
I bet your workspace gets like this at times.
Shifting and stacking worked yesterday, but to day, any hope for striking the surface requires digging. The big things are not a big deal, but the small, hard to contain things… frazzling.
A piece of paper, marker and these instructions will have at least the little things in their place. This glue-less, tape-less envelope is easy to make, label and file. Gone is the clutter. Organized are the clips. And, fertile is the clean space for the next season of ideas to deliciously fruit.
And not one paper cut!
